Summer Love at the Frying Pan

There is nothing I love more than summer in New York. The heat is sweltering, hair is frizzy, and everyone wants to dine and drink outdoors. The city feels like a new and exciting playground and several outdoor restaurants and rooftop bars open fling open their doors.

The Frying Pan is by far one of my favorite divey spots. It is a restored lightship that dates back to 1929 and is now docked as hangout haven on the Hudson River. Whether you are in the market for a romantic dinner or casual group gathering, the Frying Pan is the ultimate summer spot. The menu is not extensive but the new-American dishes are bursting with flavor. The Culturistas recommend the citrus glazed salmon served with lentils, preserved lemons, and mixed greens. Just be weary that once you board the boat will rock.

Zoolander Halloween Party and Derelict Fashion Show!

Every year, I try to find the wittiest costume and best place to show it off. The search is over! Zoolander is one of the most epic movies of all time and I can't think of a better way to celebrate Halloween than honoring the film. This party is free if you come dressed as your favorite character. Keep in mind, there will be a walk off, fashion show, and orange mocha frappacinos!

2. Katinka- red lipstick, bob, pleather
3. Hansel- fringe vest
3. Derelict- black trash bag

Catherine Malandrino hosts a street fair themed, “Paris Meets New York Marché’” in celebration of Fashion Night Out 2009 at the Meatpacking district boutique. This Thursday August 13, 2009 at 10:00 PM, Shwayze will be performing at Le Royale a European style discotheque in NYC's West Village. Weekend Getaway: The Chelsea Hotel Atlantic City!

As a first timer in Atlantic City I was expecting a place that could have been cross-pollonated by The Real Housewives of New Jersey and the cast of the Real World: Las Vegas. As it turned out, while the boardwalk had quite the New Jersey flair, the Chelsea Hotel was a polar opposite experience.

Not only was it a pleasure to stay in this plush boutique hotel, but the nightlife was the greatest perk. We did not even have to leave the hotel to experience a night out in Atlantic City. The fifth floor of the Chelsea is home to the Cabana Club and C5 which have ongoing events and parties put on by the Sky Group. Whether it is daytime pool party with DJs spinning or various musical artists performing at night, the Culturistas think this is the best nightlife you will find in AC. If you are in the mood to wind down a bit later on in the evening, head next door to the Tropicana for some some gambling. But don't forget to keep your betting low, we are still in a recession after all!

Central Park SummerStage: Bela Fleck & Toumani Diabate

Tonight August 3rd from 7:30-10:00 PM is a free African-themed event in Central Park affiliated with the SummerStage series. World renowned banjoist Bela Fleck will be putting on a performance with Malian musician Toumani Diabate. This musical event will be followed by a film screening of Fleck's journey to Africa where he discovers the musical origins of the banjo. This is a great opportunity to gather your friends with an assortment of picnic food and just hang out and enjoy an evening of African culture. Events are put on by the City Parks foundation and are all free with a suggested donation of $5. Tonight's performance will be on the great lawn.

Party With Paper Mag and Housing Works!

This Thursday July 23rd from 6:00-9:00 PM Paper Mag and Housing Works Thrift Shop are throwing a party you do not want to miss! There is nothing better than partying with a purpose. Enjoying yourself while shopping and drinking is even better when you know it is for a good cause! Housing Works is an organization that extends support and aid to the homeless in New York suffering from AIDS/HIV. This noble fete is sponsored by Carlo Rossi and will provide refreshments. Paper Mag's editors and have merchandised the store to their liking to bring you the hottest looks. There will be an auction of the displays in the window and Andrew and Andrew are djing the event. The event goes until 9:00 PM, however, if you want to keep going there is an after party at 526 Broome Street.

Best Hangover Remedies from Food2

The Culturistas, and probably everyone else in the world, are no fans of hangovers. So if you had one too many last night and need a boost, the lovely people from Food2 have posted this great article on food/drink cures for hangovers! Check it out below:

Here's how to deal -- symptom by symptom:

Headache – alcohol has a dilating effect on your blood vessels

• Aspirin (the real thing) will tackle the headache—probably the most annoying part.
• Caffeine helps relieve that pounding headache by constricting your blood vessels too; it also wakes you up. But just like booze it dehydrates, so you'll still need to drink lots of water.

Cotton Mouth – a direct result of alcohol's dehydrating effects

• Water is your new best friend. Drink a lot before you go to bed (if you happen to be in a somewhat organized state of mind) and all day the next day.
• Sports drinks have enough salt and sugar to help replace all your spent electrolytes. Bouillon, fruit juice and even pickle juice do a similar job.
• The potassium in bananas also fights the dehydration.

Nausea – alcohol irritates your stomach lining, causing nausea and extra stomach acid

• Hangover foods around the world: Northern Germans swear by marinated fish (like herring), Mexicans have posole (tripe and hominy soup), and the Senegalese have yassa chicken and lemon stew. And the ancient Roman hangover cure was wine-soaked eel.

• Not feeling the global love? If you can handle food, your best bet is something like eggs, which are high in cysteine, which soaks up the leftover toxins.

• Tomatoes & tomato juice have lots of vitamin C, which takes a serious beating from the alcohol intake. But make that Bloody Mary a Virgin Mary if you know what’s good for you.

• If you even think about eating, try a fruit smoothie to boost your blood sugar and replenish all those lost nutrients.

Exhaustion

• Go back to bed. Seriously. Your spin class will always be there...

Bad Call

• Day Drinking: Bloodys and Screwdrivers for breakfast just prolong the pain.

• Painkillers & anti-nausea drugs. Four out of five doctors agree: Don’t bother.

• Fried Foods: Can reduce a hangover if eaten before drinking; after drinking...all good, if you can keep everything down...

RUDY'S BAR: A RECESSIONSTA FAVORITE

Rudy's Bar, located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen is a kitschy dive that is a host to a diverse clientele. The crowd all has one thing in common: they are down for the free hot dogs! For each cheap brew bought, you are given a free hot dog. With a jukebox and red plastic stools and booths, Rudy's has an old time American feel. However, do not mistake this for meaning that it is sleepy, because the crowd is vibrant and energetic. When the weather is warm, they open up the back terrace which is filled with picnic tables. Getting lost in the Annex!

I had heard a lot of hype about the Lower East Side hotspot The Annex. Buzzing with hipster kids and scensters, this spot has something for everyone. Owned by Jason Baron, who is also responsible for another NY favorite the Dark Room, I was excited to check out The Annex. The top floor was blasting the electro music and everyone was dancing. Wander downstairs and it feels like a dive where the PBR is endless and the music is limited to the Oldies. Aside from hosting weekly parties, The Annex also has several shows with bands such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Silversun Pickups. One of the resident parties held at The Annex is Club NME, every Thursday, which is bicoastal and has had a long run at one of my favorite venues in LA, Spaceland. The one downfall of The Annex is that on Fridays there is a $10 cover. But it is a guaranteed good time. I can't wait to go back on and try a different night!

Brooklyn Museum: Target First Saturdays.

This past Saturday I attended Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum. This was like no event I had ever been to before, and was truly a phenomenal experience. Aside from the museum being an amazing physical space with an impressive selection of art, this cross-cultural event brings in thousands of people from all the NYC boroughs. Every first Saturday of the month, the Brooklyn museum is free and there is a showcase of art and live music with a huge dance party in the ballroom. There is food, drink, and the museum is open to the public until 11:00 PM. This event which as explained in the title happens every fist Saturday of the month. During the colder months, it is indoors, however, during the summer it becomes a large scale outdoor festival.

The music playing in the ballroom was Afro-funk and the atmosphere was so energetic and positive. The crowd was unbelievably diverse with people of all ages, ethnic groups, and socio-economic backgrounds. The cafe was serving food and drinks which was the only thing about the event that required purchase. There were also various events that went on the entire week before at the Brooklyn Museum in conjunction with First Saturdays including free movie screenings, musical performances, and literary discussions.

We had an amazing time checking out the art, dancing, and people watching. Can't wait for next month!

Inauguration day is the new Cinco de Mayo

With the amount of events happening nationwide yesterday in celebration of "Obama Day" I think 1/20/09 brought new meaning to presidential inaugurations in the United States. I'm not sure if no one was excited when Bush was inaugurated, or if I was just too teenage to care, but I have never before seen such widespread hope and a plethora of celebratory events to honor a new president. I joined in on the festivities in Forte Greene where nearly every restaurant, shop, and bar were offering specials and welcoming the neighborhood to celebrate this monumental day. We went to the Red Bamboo restaurant, a place which reminds me how good Vegan food can be. ALbeit, I do not fully understand the point of chowing down on soy chicken wings, but they were delicious nevertheless. The restaurant was offering free appetizers (before we arrived) and had other specials such as a cocktail called the "Obama." There was a dj and the inaugural ball was being projected on every single tv in the place. The overall atmosphere was that the entire neighborhood was out celebrating. It hosted all walks of life and the energy was phenomenal. People were dancing and having a great time. At that point it seems to me that January 20th will from now on be a sister holiday of Cinco de Mayo. Celebrating for a good cause, but ultimately, finding an excuse to celebrate!

Cheers to the most recent citizen-invoked holiday. Can't wait to do celebrate the memory of Inauguration Day 09 next year!

Brooklyn Street Scene

My much needed long-weekend in New York involved a significant amount of parading around Brooklyn with a significant amount of time spent in my sister's neighborhood, Park Slope. There are amazing cafes, fun and rowdy bars on nearly every block, and an overwhelming assortment of edgy and stylish boutiques. I had barely gotten off the airplane and we rushed over to the Gowanus Yacht Club where we drank cheap beer on tap and ate delicious hot dogs. I got a good feel for Brooklyn by night and we checked out some other local bars, notably the Brooklyn Social Club and Union Hall. The day was spent walking through Prospect Park and down Fifth Avenue where we got to check out some awesome shops. I found an awesome and unique purse at my sister's all-time favorite store Beacon's Closet.

We then walked over to the boutique Something Else. They had awesome gear for guys and girls and an amazing assortment of SHOES. I have been on the prowl for the "perfect" pair of gladiators and I finally found them. Dark brown Dolce Vitas which are uber comfortable and not so busy that people would gawk and point at them on the street. I love them!!

Sunday afternoon we headed over to the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene. I find most flea markets in metropolitan cities to be somewhat similar in the things they sell and the demographic they attract. It was quite reminiscent of the Melrose Trading Post, however, there was a much larger selection of independent vintage vendors. My sister and I were browsing through one woman's selection and stumbled upon this unbelievable "cats with whiskers" vest. This photo was just for fun and gave us a very long laugh!
