Enjoy Blueberry Buttermilk Sherbet!

Nothing is better than an ice cream on a hot sweaty day. I got a bit creative with the ice cream maker this past weekend and attempted Blueberry Buttermilk Sherbet. It was easy, lowfat, and absolutely delicious!

*Recipe yields approximately 4 cups

Ingredients:
2 cups of fresh blueberries
1 cup of sugar
2 cups of 1.5% buttermilk
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Preparation:
Place berries in blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Put the berry puree through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a large bowl, discarding solids. Add sugar, buttermilk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to bowl, and stir until well blended.

Pour raspberry mixture into freezer container of a 4-quart ice-cream maker, and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. After approximately 30 minutes the mix should be frozen and ready to serve.

Notes:
I want to adequately forewarn you about the possibility of foodgasmic sensations. This sherbet is DELICIOUS. Substitution of other types of berries or fruits can also be done. Don't be afraid to experiment! Anything that you think would pair well with the tartness of buttermilk will work. Next I'm trying lime-coconut!

Ice Pan: the newest dessert with options!

A friend to vegans and dieters alike, Ice Pan is the ice cream shop in the Santa Monica and La brea target center. If you haven't been inside- Ice Pan offers a new way to eat ice cream. First you choose your flavor- Vanilla, Chocolate, strawberry, green tea, kiwi, banana, yogurt, lemon, coffee, and mango. Then you decide what type of milk: whole, non-fat, low fat or soy. Finally you choose your toppings/mix ins- 15 different types like strawberries, chocolate chips and granola. There are two sizes: 7 oz for $4.95 and 9 oz for $5.95.

Then the magic happens- they make the ice cream from scratch right in front of you! To watch how its made check it out here. The ice cream is also all natural and uses fructoligosaccharide (sweetener derived from fruits and vegetables) instead of cane sugar or syrup. I had the non-fat vanilla ice cream with strawberries mixed in. I must say- for being from non-fat milk it was really creamy and delicious. I liked the vanilla flavoring- but next time i'd try something new.

Red Mango Delicious

Photobucket

The Culturista's are already big fans of Red Mango so there is no excuse not to stop by Saturday May 2nd where they are giving away a free small cup of Tangomonium [with one topping] to celebrate the release of the new flavor!

Stop by between 12pm and 4pm at participating Red Mango stores nationwide.

Tangomonium offers a light and refreshing flavor with notes of fruit and citrus. "Tangomonium not only satisfies taste buds and rejuvenates the mind, but it is also good for the body. My Flight to Yogurtland

I've been hearing the buzz about Yogurtland, now that they are popping up all around the city. So I knew it was time to try it myself! My preconceived notion of this place was that it was a self serve fantasy land of yogurt and toppings. And while it kind of is- it was different than I imagined. It is very similar to pink berry in decor and choices of toppings---but there are also MANY more flavors ranging from the fruits to the desserty flavors (Chocolate, peanut butter, cookies and cream). Plus they do have a wider range of toppings. The place is very much a mix of a typical frozen yogurt place (i.e. Penguins) and the new "pinkberry-esq" rage. So when you go in, you pick up your cup and fill it up to your hearts desire of flavors and toppings (keeping in mind you are charged by weight). It turned out to be much cheaper than Pinkberry so that was definitely a plus! It was a little tricky to get tastes--they keep the mini cups in the front. So make sure you do that first- since there are so many flavors it is hard to choose.
I went to the Yogurtland on Labrea and 3rd st. and it was a little small compared to the other places. So when a line starts to form it can be very awkward to do your thing and serve yourself.

Check out their website for all the menu items and nutrition facts ( you will be pleasantly suprised most yogurts are fat free and pretty low cal!)

Eat your heart out Pinkberry...it's all about BIG SPOON!

After months of hearing about the illustrious "Big Spoon" frozen yogurt joint I finally had the opportunity to experience the yogurtgasm everyone in the greater Sacramento area has been talking about. I had barely gotten off the plane in Sacramento and Big Spoon was destination #1. With over 75 toppings, big spoon is what you get if you merged the Big Chill yogurts and the candy bins at the supermarket together. The best part is, you get unlimited toppings and you pay by the weight of your yogurt which ends up being 1/3 of the price of Pinkberry. Now don't get me wrong...I am an x-treme PB fan...but my big spoon experience was phenomenal. I got a chocolate/vanilla swirl with raspberries, cookie dough, reese's pieces, and fat free fudge (HA!) While the toppings were a little more indulgent than Pinkberry, it only cost me $2.65. AMAZING. All in all it was everything I would have hoped for and more. Thanks Danielle!
