What to do this weekend: Rocky Horror Anniversary Show

In honor of the 35th year anniversary of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Million Dollar Theater in Downtown Los Angeles will host a special screening of the film with guest Barry Bostwick and an international shadowcast of performers on Saturday, September 25, 2010.

If you are from LA, im sure you have seen (OR

atleast heard of) the troupe that performs at the Nuart Theater in West LA every Saturday night at midnight since December 1987!! I'm sure this anniversary event will be an even more spectacular version of this rowdy show, full of the typical audience participation, costumes and props.

The screening will take place in one of the most gorgeous theaters in LA, built in 1918 by Sid Grauman. The theater gets it's namesake because it cost 1 million dollars (an astounding price at the time) to build.

Tickets for the special screening event are $20 in advance online at http://beticketing.com/rhps35 and $25 the day of show at The Million Dollar Theater. VIP tickets in the front rows are also available online for $40 ($45 at the door) and include free prop kits. The film is Rated R (under 17 not admitted without a guardian). THE 2009 NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL

The 47th annual New York Film Festival is about to begin and the Culturistas could not be more excited! September 25-October 11 the Film Society of Lincoln center will be presenting a superb variety of films from the American and International cinema. The festival will include revivals of classics such as The Wizard of Oz and international features from China, Japan, Portugal, Israel, Denmark, Germany, and several other countries. October 2-4 will be screenings of noteworthy Avant-Garde films.

LA Film Fest 2009

The LA Film festival started this past week on Thursday and will run until the 28th. This is the 15th year of the festival and it will screen over 200 films. Around 15 different venues in the Westwood village will be participating in the event-- the Landmark, the Regent, Mann Village theater and even the Geffen Playhouse, to name a few.

Some highly anticipated films will screen in the next week, such as "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale (June 23, 7:30 p.m., Majestic Crest), "Paper Man" starring Jeff Daniels and Ryan Reynolds and even Michael Bay's Transformers Sequel. It's sure to be an eclectic mix of films and documentaries.

Food Inc.

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

This is one of those movies that makes you aware. It can be disturbing and difficult to watch at times- but this is our food supply we are talking about. And as citizens, we are not being protected at the most basic level. So it is important to know where our food is coming from, how it is getting to us, how it and our planet are being treated.

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

June 12-June 25 the Human Rights Watch will be putting on their 20th annual International Film Festival in New York City. The festival will take place at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theatre and screen several outstanding films, some of which have not yet been viewed by an audience. Films are being shown here in New York from countries all over the world and tackling a wide variety of subject matter and relevant social problems from post-war life in Bosnia (SNOW) to popular media culture in Afghanistan (AFGHAN STAR.)

2009 Israeli Film Festival: Los Angeles

Feeling in need of some culture? Check out the Israeli Film Festival which started on June 3rd in LA and goes through the 18th. The festival is premiering over 30 feature films, documentaries and student shorts. Waltz with Bashir is one of the many great films showing, which we told you all about in February.

Valentino: The Last Emperor

Valentino: The Last Emperor, is a candid look at one of the most famous Haute Couture designers in the world. The film follows the life of Valentino and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti in the last year of his fashion career. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the world of fashion, featuring unprecedented access to the high temples of Haute Couture. But at the same time it is entertaining and endearing. Road to the Altar Trailer

Check out the trailer for the new webseries "Road to the Altar" which I did the costumes for! It's going to be really funny!! Starts in June!

Road to the Altar is a 10 episode, mockumentary style comedy starring Jaleel White and Leyna Juliet Weber, that follows one couple's journey through weddingland.

As Simon pops the question to Rochelle, they begin navigating the tumultuous wedding racket. All the while an incompetent reality crew follows them mock-u-ality style. Taffeta napkin selecting and mini-weiner tasting will indeed pave a turbulent road to the altar.

What to do this weekend: LA Edition

The Indian Film Festival is continuing through the weekend. The films are being screened at the Arc Light in Hollywood and you can purchase general admission tickets there for $12 or online at: Arclightcinemas.com. Saturday and Sunday's screenings are all short films starting at 1:00pm. This is a great chance to see the films of India- and get a better appreciation for them.

Tonight at 9:30 full length film "Virasat" will be screening- which stars Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire).

The Vintage Fashion Expo is also going on this Saturday and Sunday. Shopping hours at the Expos run from 10:30 am to 6 pm on Saturdays and from 11 am to 5 pm on Sundays. Admission is $10. An Early Buying session runs from 9 to 10:30 am on Saturday and carries a $20 admission. Free Sunday return for all admissions.

Each show features about 90 dealers from 8-10 different states. These exhibitors bring us the very best of vintage clothes; couture designer items; accessories like purses, hats, gloves, and shoes; and fantastic selections of jewelry. And you might even run into some stylish celebs or celebrity stylists.

A film to watch: Skills Like This

Skills Like This is an offbeat and character driven film following three days in the lives of three friends. The main character Max faces the awful truth that he will never be a writer. So, instead he decides to turn to crime. The three best friends have their lives turned upside down in the backlash that follows. But at the same time it is not what you'd expect at all. The film has a great soundtrack and it is unexpectedly heartwarming and comedic. The film is directed Monty Miranda and stars Spencer Berger, Kerry Knuppe, Gabriel Tigerman, and Brian D. Phelan.

Skills like This opens this Friday, April 3rd at the Sunset Laemmle and is already out in a couple theaters in NYC.

Frost/Nixon

You may have seen the film- since this years Oscars held it in high esteem--but it started as a play, written by Peter Morgan. The play had successful runs in NYC and London and now for the first time it is in LA. The LA version stars Stacy Keach as Richard Nixon and Alan Cox as David Frost. While both actors had great performances, I was especially impressed by Stacy Keach's ability to bring such vulnerability and humility to his character. I left the theater feeling confused as to why I felt bad for Nixon. The costumes were fun since it was set in the 70's and the set designs are simple and practical- conveying the space without being overly fussy. They include a monitor at the back of the stage which serves as a TV set for the audience. This was a very effective way to communicate to the audience what the interview looked like on TV. It gives us the sense that we are there in that time period watching it live.

My only gripe is that I think a more intimate theater would have been a better venue for this play. When you are in a theater so large, like the Ahmanson, you can't see facial expressions on the characters faces and you feel this distance between you. It can be harder to relate to the characters. They attempted to solve this through the TV monitor- but a smaller theater would have made the play more enjoyable.

Besides that, Frost/Nixon is a great play. It shows a part of history and makes you feel as if you are there watching it unfold. If you actually did watch it unfold in the late 1970's than this play will fill you with nostalgia, while giving you background information you probably did not know.

Frost/Nixon will be at the Ahmanson Theater from March 11-29th, 2009.

Tokyo! The Movie

In TOKYO!, three visionary directors (Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-ho) come together to create this triptych of films, examining the nature of one unforgettable city. It is done in the tradition of such films as Paris Je T'aime and New York I Love You, which asks the question: do we shape cities or do cities shape us?

I thought the film's intro really defines this movie, it was the sounds of an airplane and flight attendant's speech while taking off to it's destination. Tokyo! truly does transport us to another place, one filled with intrigue and surprises around every corner.

The first of the three films was my favorite. It was entitled, "Interior Design" and was directed by Michael Gondry (of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). It involves a couple that move to Tokyo to try and make it in the big city. The main character, Hiroko, battles with the notions of growing up and being defined by what you do for a living, a feeling all of us can relate to. With a very kafka-esqe surreal twist, Hiroko finally is put to ease.

First look at Angelina Jolie in "Salt"

First Look at Angelina Jolie in Salt. Salt's main character, Edwin A. Salt was originally written for Tom Cruise but when he dropped out, Angelina signed on to the film and it was rewritten for her. The characters new name is Evelyn A. Salt.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura opens up about this spy flick to USA Today, "She’s a character you never know. People who think they know the real her may or may not. Those who think they can tell whether she’s in a disguise also may or may not. You’re supposed to be kept guessing. She tells you her agenda, but are you supposed to believe it?”

Salt will be released until 2010.

The Jonas Brothers 3-d concert premiere

Unfortunately I was in Hollywood yesterday walking right by this craaaazy premiere for the Jonas Brothers 3-d concert. It was a mad house, streets closed off, mess of traffic, hordes of teenage fans and their mothers screaming for these boys. Now being a little too old to be part of this fandom, I keep asking myself why are they so popular? Anyone have any insight? They do have great style though! Love the three piece suit, the rolled up blazer sleeves and the bow tie (seen below).

All My Single Ladies

Late January/Early February is the annual chick flick boom time of the year. Over the period of two weeks several female-oriented films that will be coming out. Perfect for an outing with your girlfriends.

NEW IN TOWN- 1/30/09
This romantic comedy starring Renee Zellwegger and Harry Connick Jr is about a big city girl that moves to a small town in Minnesota for a job. She finds herself learning that there is more to life than bling and that Midwestern men know how to get down. Yes it looks cheezy but I want to see it.

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU- 2/6/09
Not only does this movie have an AMAZING cast but it also has been a long time coming. I read the book a few years back and was honestly somewhat disappointed. However, I thought that if it was adapted to a screenplay it could be much more successful and animated. Low and behold, some screenwriter followed my advice (HAHA) and did just that. The movie looks witty, touching, and like an all around feel good film. I know what I will be doing next Sunday afternoon.

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC- 2/13/09
Yet another film based on a book. I have been waiting for this movie to come out since I first heard they put it into production. Whoever said money can't buy happiness is wrong. Rebecca gives her credit card a lot of exercise and is quite the advocate of retail therapy. The book was cute, and I can't wait to see Isla Fischer in action. The best part is, the costumes are done by Patricia Fields. Bring it on.

Waltz With Bashir

Waltz With Bashir is a powerful animated documentary which divulges into the unconscious and repressed memories of former Israeli soldiers. The film, written and directed by Ari Folman, is narrated by him, a man in his mid thirties who has lost any memory from his time in combat. He goes on a journey to discover who he was and what he did when he served in the Israel Defense Forces and fought in the war with Lebanon in 1982. He visits former friends who he served with in the hopes that their stories would help trigger his own memories and he could gain some form of understanding as to what he did during the war. Waltz with Bashir is a powerful and non-sugar coated assessment of the realities of combat and war. It shows these "men" at age 18 clueless driving tanks around Beirut conditioned to kill.

At first I thought that because it was animated, it might take away from the significance of the piece and the subject matter. However, it in no way did and if anything made it much more dramatic to watch war scenes in animation. Two thirds of the way into the film i found the narrator's voice to be particularly monotonous and at that point I started thinking it would have been better as a short. However, just as the film lost my focus it was able to draw me back in again at the end in an unbelievably powerful way.

Waltz with Bashir got a lot of buzz at Cannes and is nominated for best foreign film for the Academy Awards. It is an important piece all based on truth. I highly recommend it!
