Critics Choice Awards

Well it is that time of year again---AWARDS SEASON! Here are some pictures and list of winners from the 14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards.

Some of the sartorial standouts:

Though I'm not sure what has happened to Kate Beckinsale's acting career, she did show up to the Critics' Choice Awards looking fab in this J. Mendel number!

Amanda Bynes in Herve Leger. I'm always a sucker for the Herve Leger band dress- and she looks great. Unfortunately those shoes look like they are falling off her or something.



Katy Perry looking very Old Hollywood glam in this D&G gown. I love the ice blue color.

I think this Gianfranco Ferre dress is very interesting- but I don't know if Anne pulls this off. She seems a little too slight to support the structure of the dress. This is something Charlize should be wearing.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly at the People's Choice Awards

The 35th annual People's Choice awards were yesterday night in Los Angeles. Here are some of the people in attendance and their ensembles.

Let's start with the Good:

Dakota Fanning, the almost 15 year old actress, looks so chic in this one shouldered satin blue dress. Clearly she has passed her awkward stage and looks really fabulous!

The Bad:

I usually think Debra Messing looks pretty good on the red carpet- but this is just bad. The only think I like about it is the color. The silhouette of the dress- while a bit fashion forward- just does not translate on the body. It is not flattering, even on the slim actress. Not to mention the beige color shoes do not go at all- and I don't like the wood platform either. Just take pictures from the waist up, Debra.

And the Ugly:

Well Kate Hudson's shoes are cute. But that is about it. I don't understand this dress at all. It isn't cute, It looks cheap and it's not flattering either. When she was trying on dresses did she really put this on and go: YES this is it! I love this dress? Or did she forget she was going to this award show and just grab something at the bottom of her closet? I'm leaning towards the latter.

Booyah for Pocha!

This restaurant is an amazing find and unlike most places in New York, gives you MORE than your money's worth. Pocha 32 is in New York's Koreatown, which in actuality is one busy block. The dark and edgy interior gives off the atmosphere of food carts and street food. While it is cheap in price, there is no skimping on portion size or flavor. We had an enormous pot of ramen which was $4.99 and korean chicken kabobs were also $4.99. We received complimentary kimchi and other veggie treats. Not only was our food incredibly flavorful but also very filling. We left happy and full and our total bill was less than $20. Win, win, win!

Restaurant Week

If there are any restaurants on your list to try, now is the time to go! It is from January 25 to 30, 2009 and February 1 to 6, 2009. Restaurant week works like this: each restaurant participating creates a set menu of three courses. We pay either $16, $22 or $28 for lunches and $26, $34 or $44 for dinners depending on if it is "deluxe dining" "premier dining" or "fine dining." It is a chance for great restaurants in LA to lower their prices to get more diners. And it is a chance for us diners to reap the benefits!

Movie to see: Slumdog Millionaire

If you haven't already seen this film- see it asap! The film is by Fox Searchlight and directed by Danny Boyle (of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later). It is likely up for best picture and best director at the Academy Awards. I don't want to give anything away- but the general synopsis is that a street kid from the slums of Mumbai scores a spot on the show "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" and as we go through the show's questions, we see the parallels to his life in a series of flash backs. It was such a great story and it really took me through all ranges of emotions.

Restaurant to try: Al Gelato

Al Gelato has been one of my family's favorite spots for years. It is a quaint, family run restaurant nestled on the trendy Robertson Blvd. While they do have great authentic Italian food- the real reason I come is for the gelato!

Now, I lived in Florence, Italy for 6 months- so I've tried my fair share of gelati---and this is the only place I've been since that has actually measured up. Try the chocolate hazelnut (aka gianduia) for a traditional flavor- or try something more daring like "rose" or "pumpkin." And don't forget to bring cash! They dont take credit cards.
