Oscar Fashion Part 1 (The best of the best)

The Oscar's were tonight in Los Angeles. Among the actors at the show, there were a few sartorial standouts! Here they are:


Angelina looked gorgeous in this simple but chic Elie Saab gown. I was a little dissapointed that she wore black but her emerald earings and ring changed it up a bit.


Anne Hathaway showed up in a sparkling, gorgeous Armani Prive gown--however her make-up was not flattering--it made her look pretty tired.


Evan Rachel Wood's champagne colored Elie Saab gown had such gorgeous detailing and draping.


So refreshing that Natalie Portman showed up in a pretty color! I love this dress and the detail on the bodice--just gorgeous. And she was wearing Rodarte--one of our favorite designers :)

Vanessa Hudgens Oscar style

I typically LOVE Vanessa's red carpet style. Esp this dress she wore to this past Golden Globes (seen below) But I'm not quite sure what to think of her Marchesa gown she wore to the Oscar's tonight. Apparently it was made specially for her- which is pretty cool. I guess those weird flowers on the bodice are throwing me off. What do you guys think of Vanessa's Oscar look?

Fashion Week 2009: Mad about Malandrino!

The Malandrino breakfast presentation of their Fall and Winter collection for 2009 was a unique and unconventional choice of venue at the renowned Rainbow Room. With an unbelievable view from the 65th floor and tasty selection of pastries and bellinis, the vibe was warm and effortlessly chic. Noted celebrities sitting front row were Mary J. Blige, Michele Trachtenberg, Sophia Bush, and Mena Suvari. The edgy designs displayed an array of intricately adorned dresses and some that even displayed a handprint as if wrapping around a woman's waist which was also done by Commes des Garcons in 2007. All in all, the daring collection and charming and unique setting made for an impressive and enjoyable showing.

The Art of Two Germany's Exhibit @ LACMA

The Art of Two Germanys exhibit at LACMA, is a fascinating look into post WWII and Coldwar era Germany. Following the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, the nation was divided into four occupational zones (The Soviet Union, The US, Great Britain and France each having a section). The political tensions of these zones ultimately lead to the Cold War, which manifested in the formation of 2 German States in 1949. These two states were: the Western liberal democracy (West Germany) and the Federal Republic of German (East Germany).


When the artwork produced by these two German states are shown together, it is a window directly through their eyes. East German artists painted in a socialist realism art style which served as propaganda for the Communist state. This is juxtaposed by the abstract expressionist style of West German artists (both styles shown below)


One of my favorite rooms is filled with works from the 1960's and 70's, where artists started to experiment with new forms, materials and technologies. When you walk into the room you are greeted by the unmistakable smell of chocolate. It turns out the pastry cart, on the left hand side of the photo, is full of cracking, molding, chocolate lion busts.

While this exhibit can be an emotionally heavy one at times, it is also full of surprises around every corner. It is very large, comprised of over 300 works from 120 different artists (so give yourself an hour or two). It will be at LACMA (in the new BCAM building) until April 19th.

Look of the week: Whitney Port

Whitney Port, at the DVF show during NY Fashion week, is the Culturista's Chic look of the week for a few reasons. Though we like Olivia's look too (and her other looks this week)- Whitney really took a risk with this ensemble. And you know we are huge fans of floral/stripe combo. The DVF blazer is a great pairing to this feminine floral dress- and the purple suede booties finish off the look quite nicely. Very teen-vogue editorial.
